Unfortunately, there's no fast way to save up gold. You just have to be patient, fish a lot, and not spend any on stuff other than chum. The game takes longer the further along you go. Just stick with it. It makes the satisfaction of leveling up or moving to a new area that much better.

Is it not possible to buy RLC and then trade it for gold?
