Whichever pole you used to access the island will already be at high enough level to Defend successfully, but if you are using the other pole and it is not leveled enough, you might not get the Defend option.

The rewards in the collection are ordered in a different sequence from the other random encounters, for instance: the first two items can be acquired by Defending, and the last item can be acquired by the "offer my next few catches" option.
